Olympians set for Tyumen Grand Prix
The Tyumen Grand Slam this weekend (12 and 13 July) is the next date on the calendar for Olympians Gemma Gibbons, Colin Oates, Sally Conway who are all seeking Olympic qualification points for Rio 2016.
Fresh from the back of her Grand Prix bronze medal, Natalie Powell will also be competing, and looking for more points to boost herself up the rankings as will Chris Sherrington, who last took bronze in the Pan American Open in Cuba
London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons said: “I am looking forward to it and I am getting stronger and back to fitness. I feel I have made important strides in the previous competitions and hope to bring back a medal from here.”
Three of the four London 2012 -78kg medallists will fight at the Tyumen Grand Slam this weekend.
Kayla Harrison – Olympic & World Champion (USA), silver medallist Gemma Gibbons (GBR & bronze medallist Mayra Aguiar (BRA) will all be in action on Sunday. — in Tyumen, Russia.
Colin said: “I am feeling really good. The training has been going really well and we have a crossover between Commonwealth training and qualifying for the Olympics. If I medal this will give me a good headstart in my first Olympic qualifyer. I’m looking forward to going out there with the team.”
Sally Conway said: “I’m looking forward to getting out there to fight in my first qualification event and pick up some points for rio. I’m wanting to put in a good performance and come away with a medal.”
The action commences at 10am local time (Russia) approximately 6am BST.
