Two judo stars named for the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games as Team GB squad announced.

The British Olympic Association (BOA) announced today that Lulu Piovesana and Pete Miles will represent Team GB along with many others at the second Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 16 to 28 August 2014 in Nanjing, China.

With many of the senior Team GB athletes already on their journey to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the YOG play a crucial role in the development of young athletes and provides a multi-sport Games experience that helps them along the route to their own Olympic dreams.

Team GB consists of 33 athletes aged 15-18 years old who will compete across 14 sports at Nanjing 2014. They will test themselves against around 3,600 of the finest young sportspeople from more than 200 other nations around the world.

Lulu Piovesana said: “I can’t wait to get out there and get the Team GB kit on. I’m hoping to challenge for a medal but also enjoy the whole experience that a Youth Olympic Games has to offer. It’s such a big opportunity to learn and develop as an athlete.”

Pete Miles added: “I’ve managed to win medals at both the Cadet Europeans and Worlds so I’m aiming for a similar result from Nanjing despite having to move up two weight categories for it. I’m looking forward to fighting in Asia for the first time and learning from the experience. It should be a great event.”

Sarah Winckless, Chef de Mission, said: “This is a great time to be a young British athlete and Nanjing 2014 provides the perfect springboard for budding Olympians to gain valuable experience at a multi-sport event and as part of Team GB.

“Youth Olympic Games such as Nanjing offer the chance for young athletes to experience life in an Olympic Village, mix with competitors from different sports and nationalities, and are given the chance to grow as individuals as well as athletes. These events have helped shape the careers of Team GB Olympic stars such as Jade Jones and we hope the same will be said for Nanjing.”

Gary Edwards (Judo) said: “Peter and Lulu won’t be fazed by Nanjing. They’re probably two of the most experienced athletes going and have competed at every major junior event in the sport. They’re two of the best cadet athletes we’ve had in the last five or 10 years coming from Great Britain. They’re both fine athletes so should win plenty of matches – hopefully we can come away with a medal or two.”
