Team Bath judo player Emmanuel Nartey has confirmed he will be in action at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, despite injuring an ankle at the African Judo Championships in Mauritius at the weekend.

Nartey, who represents Ghana at his second Commonwealths, went over on his right ankle in his quarter-final contest, before battling on to finish seventh in the under-73kg class. He flew back from Mauritius early, with support from the International Judo Federation, to get his right ankle checked out at Team Bath’s Sports Injury Clinic. After a consultation with Barry Edwards, Team Bath’s head physiotherapist first thing this morning, he declared himself ready to go for Glasgow.

“When it happened I didn’t know how series the injury was and I thought ‘Oh no, not now’,” said Nartey, who was back training on the judo mat at the Sports Training Village.

“The main thing is the fact that I will be at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships.” Nartey is likely to be one of very few judo players at Glasgow who also competed at the last Commonwealth Games to feature the sport at Manchester 12 years ago.

He is aiming to become the first Ghanaian judo player to win a Commonwealth Games medal and if he wins gold he would be the first judoka from an African nation to win Commonwealth gold.

A punchy new preview to the BBC’s Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games coverage featuring Nartey has now gone live. Film crews working for the BBC filmed the judo player  at the University of Bath Sports Training Village.

Nartey, who trains on Team Bath’s judo programme, represents Ghana at the Glasgow Games. He competed for Ghana the last time the sport was on the Commonwealth programme, at the Manchester 2002 Games.
