Great Britain’s most promising judoka descended on the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield this weekend for the British Championships for Pre-Cadets and Cadets.

Athletes travelled from across the UK to battle on the mat to win the prestigious title of British Champion and they produced some excellent judo in their pursuit of gold.

The first day of action saw the cadet boys in action with Henry Wakes of Shadsworth taking the under 42kg title, defeating Daniel Holt (Osaka). Bronze medals went to James Bruscaglia (Tayside) and Harry Tredaway (Coventry).

Beach’s Ashton Whalley was victorious at -46kg. Joshua Giles (Coventry) got silver and Calum Game (Osaka) and Murray Wood (Garioch) bronze.

The under 50kg title was won by Connor Potts of Goole, Peter Hampshire (Gateshead) silver and Leonardo Bertocchi (Tsukuru Judo Academy) and Rob Hamilton (Edinburgh Club) bronze.

Danderhall/Destination’s -55kg athlete Scott Thomson won the British title with Jack Murphy (Pro Judo) claiming silver. Brayden Quinn (United Judo) and Jacob Aldridge (Newbury) got bronze.

Neil MacDonald from Judo Scotland took the -60kg title with a win over Daniel Powell (Wolverhampton). Bronze was won by Tommy Almond (Moberly) and Abdurrahman Chaatouf (Ernest Bevin Phoenix).

Under 66kg saw Andrew Morris of Wirral end the day as British Champion. Leonardo de Moura Muniz (Tower Hamlets) got a silver medal, with Eric Ham (Glossop) and Harry Lovell-Hewitt (Stroud) getting bronze.

TSV Grosshadern’s Hugo Murphy won the -73kg category, beating Stuart McWatt (Garioch). James Hayes (Bradley Stoke) and Jozsef Pretsner (Wolverhampton) got the bronze medals.

Jamal Petgrave of Westcroft won the title in the -81kg category as Del Imrie (Jidel) took silver. Bronze medals went to Sebastian Potter (Whitburn) and Tomas Luckus (Ernest Bevin Phoenix).

Ari Aristidou of SKK triumphed at -90kg with a win over Cailin Calder (Edinburgh Club). Kyle Ormrod (SKK) and Caspian Taberham (Moonrakers) got bronze.

Moberly’s John Jayne won his eight British title at +90kg and Roberts Juzenko got silver.

The pre-cadet girls also took to the mat and Redbridge’s Samantha Gipp was crowned British Champion at -32kg. Georgia Howard (Ford) took silver and Toni Malone (Wolverhampton) bronze.

Amy Platten from Redbridge won at -36kg winning over Darcie Hancocks (Samurai). Bronze went to Jaime-Leigh Whitaker (Glossop) and Ella Ashwell (Renrukan).

Osaka’s Mollie Game won the -40kg British title beating Libby Arkless (Newburn). Sofija Bojat (Ealing) and Emma Forrest (Destination Judo).

Destination Judo’s Kirsty Marsh took the -44kg title, with Claire Daily (Southside) getting silver and Katie Purvis (Newburn) and Madeleine Herbert (Osaka) getting bronze.

Under 48kg saw Yasmin Javadian of Coventry take the title with Chloe Gowen (Patchway) getting silver and Emily Cowell (Osaka) and Jasmine Hacker-Jones (Maesteg) getting bronze.

Highland Budokan’s Josie Steele was victorious at -52kg with a silver medal for Tommi Imrie (Jidel). Bronze medals went to Libby Anderson (Highland Budokan) and Megan Glover (SKK).

Sportif’s Emma Carroll triumphed at -57kg. Silver went to Holly Jones (Mold) and bronze went to Imogen Ranner (Melbourn) and Annie Boby (Osaka).

Amy Baker was -63kg British Champion. The Glanford Kodokan athlete beat Holly Bentham (East Yorkshire Judo Academy) in the final with Rebecca Gray (Destination Judo) and Karla-Marie Owen (Maesteg) winning bronze medals.

Over 63kg victory went to Kirstie Strouts McCallion of St Columb’s. Bethany Meadows (Coventry) got silver with bronze medals being won by Georgia Greenidge (Enfield) and Amy Oram (Yate Star).

Sunday, it was the turn of the cadet girls. Harris Judo’s Olivia Piechota won the gold medal in the -40kg category, with Molly Harvey (Tonbridge) taking silver and Olivia Reid (Garioch) bronze.

At -44kg Courtney Shoulder of Newburn took her sixth British title, whilst Erin Peden (Clyde) got silver. Bronze medals went to Holly Eccles (Pinewood) and Kiah Reid (Murakwai).

Parkwood’s Freya Harrild won the -48kg gold whilst Yasmin Gordon (Sportif) got silver and Abigael McBeath (Aboyne) and Aimee Grant (Highland Budokan) won bronze.

Lanina Solley triumphed in the -52kg category . The Tonbridge athlete beat Chelsie Giles (Coventry) who took silver, as bronze medals went to Natasha Fraser (The Parks) and Molly Storey (Karen Briggs MBE School of Judo).

Bradley Stoke’s Lele Nairne won the -57kg gold as silver went to Lucy Day (Redbridge). Bronze medals were won by Jessica Carl (Osaka) and Olivia Spellman (Pinewood).

Under 63kg saw Lubjana Piovesana (Bishop Challoner) round off a successful year in style with the British title, beating Shelley Ludford (Osaka) in the final. Heather Davis (Gateshead) and Lucy King (Moberly) took bronze.

Gendros athlete Jodie Newell got a gold at -70kg with Rachel Tytler (Pro Judo) getting silver and bronze went to Imogen Morland (Coventry) and Lauren Hawkins (Westcroft).

In the final cadet girls category (+70kg) victory went to Redbridge’s Charlotte Newbold. Jessica Smith (Neath YMCA) claimed silver and bronze was won by Elin Lloyd (Wolverhampton) and Katie Comins(SKK).

Also in action were the pre-cadet boys. Witley/Osaka’s -30kg judoka Jamie Mansfield was crowned British Champion with Ryan Forrest (Jidel) getting silver.

Charlie Young of Ryecroft won the -34kg title and Nathan Gallacher of Samurai claimed silver. James Reseigh (Vale) and Thomas Venables (Judo Le Sorgive) won the bronze medals.

British Champion at -38kg went to South Brent’s Thomas Smith who beat Tohgo Kimura (Ealing) in the final. Sportif duo Ryan Thomson and Finlay Allan both got bronze.

Oliver Park of Hibari Kan triumphed in the -42kg category where Patrick Barnes (Pyrford) got silver and bronze went to Jack Grant (Highland Budokan) and Archie Platt (Osaka).

Under 46kg saw 2A’s Judokwai’s Samuel Perry defeat Oliver Chesney (New Cross Martial Arts) to become British Champion. Daniel Rabbitt (Dragons Judo) and Jamie MacKenzie (Tayside) got bronze.

It was another 2A’s Judokwai gold at -50kg from Samuel Morris with Christopher Love (Clyde) getting silver. Bronze medals went to Ryan Quigley (Hibari Kan) and Jamie Spencer-Pickup (Ryecroft).

Cameron Charles was flying the flag for Pinewood claiming the British title at -55kg with a win over Ioan Harris (Maestag). Benjamin Coker (61 JC) and Ryan Turnbull (Destination Judo) got bronze.

Plymouth’s Arkadiusz Kaniewski was victorious over Lewis Widdicombe (South Brent) at -66kg. Bronze went to Patrick License (Ryecroft) and Neal Leech (Medway Park) got bronze.

Matthew Elliott of Murakwai won the -66kg title beating Jack Thompson (Kin Ryu) as Louis Saez (Clyde) and Max Fraser (Bishop’s Stortford) won bronze medals.

The final category +66kg was won by Kin Ryu’s Connor Leonard with Matthew Boyce (Melbourn) taking silver and Ben Paddock (Mercia) bronze.
