Gibbons, Oates et al look forward to Croatian Grand Prix
London 2012 Olympic silver medallist Gemma Gibbons will lead the charge for Great Britain at the 2013 Rijeka Grand Prix this coming weekend (Saturday 14 to Sunday 15 September), in Croatia.
Fighting in the -78kg category, Gibbons, who got a bronze at the last Grand Slam in Moscow, is joined by Cardiff’s Natalie Powell who achieved fifth at the same competition, in the same weight category, as both hope to push for honours in this competition.
At the lighter end of the scale Essex-Judoka, Faith Pitman, who struck gold at the San Salvador Continental Open earlier this year ,will be fighting in the -63kg category, while Moscow Grand Slam bronze medallist Sarah Adlington (+78kg) from Edinburgh will be looking to tuck another medal under her belt for the heavyweights in this competition.
Meanwhile, Olympian Colin Oates (-66kg), who beat the current Olympic Champion and a two-time World Champion at the recent Rio World Championships, will be hoping to make another big impact in the men’s competition. He is a Grand Slam and Continental Open silver medallist.
Miami Grand Prix winner Tom Reed (-81kg) will be hoping to repeat his performance with another gold in Croatia for the men’s team.
Nathon Burns (-66kg)and Jan Gosiewski (-73kg) will be hoping for more silverware after successes in recent competitions: Burns came second the European Cup in Sarajevo and the Pan American Open in Montevideo and Gosiewski’s performance saw him polish off a silver medal at the Tallinn World Cup.
San Salvador silver medallist and London 2012 Olympian Danny Williams (-73kg) will also be fighting at the event as a self funding athlete. He joins Matt Purssey (-90kg), who came third in the 2012 Olympic Test and bronze medallist in San Salvador.
Scottish coach Billy Cusack accompanies Chris Bowles, the GB lead men’s coach and Kate Howey, the women’s coach.
