Miami Cadet World Championships beckon for Britain’s best young judoka

A strong team of the country’s finest young judo talent has been selected to represent Great Britain at the 2013 World Cadet Championships which begins today (Thursday 8 August) and runs up until Sunday 11 August in Miami, USA.

Peter Miles will take to the tatami today fresh from his silver in the European Youth Olympics and bronze at the European Championships and will looking to make it a gold this time.

Neil McDonald, who like Pete secured a bronze in the June Tallinn European Championships, will fight on Friday.

Saturday will be the turn of another Tallinn European bronze medallist Jodie Caller (-57kg) and European Cup winner Lubjana (Lulu) Piovesana, who will be fighting in the -57kg and -63kg categories respectively.

Meanwhile, Sunday will see Sarah Hill (-70kg) who also finished fifth in the EYOF conclude GB’s presence at the Cadet World Championships.

The team will be led by coach Gary Edwards. He said: “The GB team has been in Miami for two days now and overall their training has gone well. Peter Miles is on first and is one of our best medal hopes, He has got the Japanese first match but he is confident of beating him and taking a medal. The rest of the the team are very upbeat about their chances this week too.”

The action begins at 3pm today (10am Miami time) with the final block starting around at 10pm (5pm Miami time) each day.

Thursday 8 August 2013: -40kg, -44kg, -50kg, -55kg
Friday 9 August 2013: -48kg, -52kg, -60kg, -66kg
Saturday 10 August 2013: -57kg, -63kg, -73kg, -81kg
Sunday 11 August 2013: -70kg, +70kg, -90kg, +90kg.
