The British Judo Association would like to congratulate Judo Olympic silver medallist, Gemma Gibbons and fellow judoka Euan Burton who married in a traditional fairytale Scottish wedding on Sunday 26 May surrounded by family, friends and fellow Team GB friends.

The bonnie couple wed in a magical candle-lit ceremony at The Cave, an ancient stone vault in Edinburgh.

Guests included fellow judokas Sam Ingram, David Sommerville, Sarah Clark, Kelly Edwards, James Austin, Gemma Howell, Colin Howey and her Olympic coach Kate Howey. Other high profile Olympians attended too.

Gemma captivated the hearts of the nation at the Olympic Games when she won silver despite having a broken thumb. When she won her private tribute was caught on camera and broadcast around the world. It is one of the Olympics’ most poignant moments.

Fellow Olympian Euan, who proposed to Gemma in his native Edinburgh on New Year’s Eve, is now a national coach with Judo Scotland after representing Britain at both the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

The sporting pair who now live in Edinburgh had planned to marry following the Commonwealth Games next year but brought the ceremony forward 18 months as Gemma has been out of action from judo competitions following a broken wrist.

Speaking about her big day, she told Hello Magazine: “It was a perfect wedding. I had only just got used to calling Euan my fiance’ now I’m getting used to calling him my husband. It puts a smile on my face every time.”

The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Mexico. The BJA wishes them a long and happy marriage.
