Seven heaven for British Judo in Argentina

British Judo’s nine-strong team won seven medals at the Buenos Aires Pan American Open on Friday and Saturday to earn vital world ranking points in this new Olympic cycle.

The top 16 on the world ranking list are seeded at Grand Prix events while the top eight will receive the same reward at the European Championships in April.

The team, who all self-funded their participation, won two gold, one silver and four bronze medals to finish third in the medal table behind Brazil and Russia.

Patrick Dawson unceremoniously ended London 2012 Olympic champion Mansur Isaev’s (RUS) campaign in the -73kg semi-final before besting Alejandro Clara (ARG) by a yuko in the final.

The win moves Dawson up to 40th place on the world ranking list.

Connie Ramsey made it a Scottish double as she won all three fights including winning the gold in style by defeating Melissa Rodriguez (ARG) by ippon in the -57kg final.

Ramsey moves up to 34th on the world ranking list.

Silver went to Matthew Clempner who followed up on his gold at the Montevideo Pan American Open a week ago with another impressive performance.

Clempner lost by ippon in the +100kg final to Walter Santos (BRAZ) but those consecutive results have shot him up to 46th on the world ranking list.

Bronze medals went to the Team Bath trio of Gregg Varey, Tom Reed and Ben Fletcher while Matthew Purssey completed the medal rush for Britain.

Varey climbed to 101st place in the -60kg category, Tom Reed to 91st in the -81kg category and Ben Fletcher shoots up to 51st place in the -100kg category.

Purssey seals a place in the top 50 as the bronze medal lifts him up to 43rd position.

Graham Trinder finished in fifth-place in the -60kg category while Lewis Keeble held the same position in the -66kg category.
