Olympians and Paralympic medallist lead star-laden English Open field

Three London 2012 Olympians and Paralympic silver medallist Sam Ingram will be among a star-laden field competing at the English Open on Sunday at iceSheffield.

London 2012 trio Kelly Edwards, Sally Conway and Winston Gordon will all compete.

Edwards moves up to -52kg while Conway and Gordon return to action for the first time since competing at the greatest show on earth.

Conway battles in the -70kg field while Gordon moves up to the -100kg category.

London 2012 Paralympic silver medallist Sam Ingram – who won a British Championships bronze medallist against fully sighted opposition in January – continues his bid for a place at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the -90kg category.

Fresh from winning a career-best Warsaw European Open bronze medal a week ago, in-form Jan Gosiewski will see action in the -73kg category.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix silver medallist Natalie Powell leads a strong Welsh team who will be out to impress having missed the British Championships in January due to the adverse conditions.

In addition to some impressive star power the field is also one of the deepest to grace the English Open stage with 400 athletes in action over across the junior and senior sections.

The +100kg category is often lacking in numbers at the highest level on the domestic stage but this weekend an eye-catching 18 judoka will bid for honours. Last year only five judoka entered the same category in Sheffield.

Meanwhile the Junior Open will include senior British Championships silver medallist Lucas Rowe who competes at -60kg while Junior British Champion Daniel Lyon fights at -66kg.

Adam Hoshal, who won gold at the British Schools Championships in 2010, showcases the benefit of fighting at that developmental event as he now takes to the -81kg category at the English Junior Open.

Former Junior World bronze medallist Hayley Willis fights in the -48kg field while fellow junior standout Freya Dechastelain battles in the -52kg competition.
