Anglia Ruskin University topped the medal table in the individual event and retained the men’s team title at the British Universities and Colleges Championships at EIS Sheffield.

The competition was fought over two days with individual championships fought on the Saturday and the Team Championships on the Sunday.

In total over the weekend Anglia Ruskin’s 13 players had 87 fights with 66 wins. Of these 66 wins 58 were ippon (maximum score).

Anglia Ruskin had a typically strong squad with 13 players fighting that included a mix of kyu grades (coloured belts) and dan grades (black belts). For the first time this year they also had female competitors. On day one they produced three golds, and two bronze in the dan grades and two 5ths in the kyu grades.

In the dan grade section, gold medals went to Mike Stewart (-66kg), Adrian Markov (-81kg) and Andre Cojuhari (+100kg). Bronze medals went to fellow dan grades Jonathon Morris (-81kg) and Janaina Magalhaes (-63kg).

Anglia Ruskin Head Coach Bob Challis said: “I think in some ways we were unlucky to have all three of our -81kg dan grade men to end up on the same side of the draw, if not we could have maybe got gold, silver and bronze in that weight group.”

“To win the team event for a second year in a row is fantastic and shows a dominance in university judo but I don’t want people to judge our judo program on performance alone, we have beginners, high performance coach education and judo research at Anglia Ruskin, the performance players are only one element. No other university in the UK has such a vast judo program.”
