Following two terrific days of judo last weekend, this week will see some of Britain’s best Junior and Senior judoka fight it out for national glory at the 2018 British Championships at EIS Sheffield on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December.
Over 350 judoka will be stepping on the mat this weekend including a number of returning champions from 2017.
On Saturday in the Junior competition, the -52kg weight category will be hotly contested with Yasmin Javadian (Coventry Judo Club) looking to retain her title. However, she won’t have it all her own way with the likes of Tatum Keen (Bradley Stoke Judo Club), Fiona Todman (Destination Judo) and Molly Harvey (Tonbridge Judo Club) all going for gold.
The -57kg is another stacked weight category and 2018 will see a new British champion being crowned. Glasgow European Open winner Josie Steele (Highland Budokan) will be one to watch at that weight as will Darcie Hancocks (Hardy Spicer 83) and Leah Grosvenor (Bradley Stoke Judo Club).
Michael Fryer (Rush Judo) will be looking to add another national title to the Fryer family collection after his brother Lewis’s gold last week. The current -66kg champion will have to be at his very best with Henry Wakes (Camberley), Samuel Perry (2A’s Judokwai) and Jacob Aldridge (Judo Club Osaka) among the chasing pack.
Two of the -100kg medallists from 2017 will be in attendance. Jay Proctor (Yamarashi) and Matthew Boyce (Melbourn) will be hoping to secure top spot on the medal rostrum though Oliver Barratt (Dragon’s Judo Academy) will also be one to watch at that weight.
The Senior weight categories on Sunday will be no less exciting. At -63kg there were will three judoka ranked inside IJF World Top 30.
Amy Livesey (SKK), Lubjana Piovesana (Bishop Challoner) and Lucy Renshall have all medalled at Grand Slam and/or Grand Prix level in the last three years and the crowd will be treated to world-class judo from the -63kg trio.
Current -78kg champion and Junior World bronze medallist Shelley Ludford (Judo Club Osaka) will be looking to cap an excellent 2018 in Sheffield. However, Jemima Yeats-Brown (Ryecroft) will have something to say about that with the dynamic judoka having finished fifth at the Senior Worlds in Baku.
At -73kg, Danny Williams (Camberley) will be hoping to regain the title he last won in 2011. Eric Ham (Glossop Judo Club) will be aiming to go one better after finishing second in 2017 while Alex Paske (Army) goes in off the back of winning silver at the Yaoundé African Open last month.
There will be some powerhouse judo at +100kg. 2016 champion Neil Schofield (Budokwai) will be aiming to regain his title while Wesley Greenidge (Enfield) will be among those looking to take home gold.
Competition starts at 0930 on each day with doors opening from 0830 for spectators
