The best student judoka in Great Britain made their way to ICESheffield for the 2018 BUCS National Championships on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 February.

Day one saw judoka going for individual glory in the 1 Kyu and Above and 2 Kyu and Below competitions.

There were a number of outstanding fighters in action including a London 2012 Olympian, U23 European and Junior European medallists and current British champions.

University of Wolverhampton were the outstanding team in the 1 Kyu and Above competition on day one, winning eight medals in total including golds for Acelya Toprak (-57kg), Kelly Peterson-Pollard (-70kg), Ebony Drysdale-Daley (-78kg) and Dan Powell (-73kg).

London 2012 Olympian Emmanuel Nartey took home gold in the -81kg category for University of East London while Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz (Bath) came out on top in an impressive -63kg category.

In the 2 Kyu and Below individual competition Sheffield and Loughborough were the only Universities to have multiple gold medallists.

Anna Brittain (-63kg) and Ben Garforth (-100kg) topped the medal rostrum from Sheffield while Dmitry Nikonov (-81kg) and Eriks Kehris (-90kg) both finished with gold for Louhgborough.

In Sunday’s team competition University of Wolverhampton successfully defended their Women’s title while it was Oxford University who took home gold in the Men’s.
