It was an action packed weekend in Sheffield this week as over 500 young aspiring judoka took to the mat as hoping to be crowned British Champion.
A fast and frantic two days’ worth of judo at the English Institute of Sport took place with the Pre-Cadets and Cadets proving that British Judo has a long line of upcoming potential stars in the system.
The pick of the results included a happy return for Emma Nunn from Bishop Stortford as she was able to better the silver medal won at -32kg last year with Gold in the -36kg this year as she defeated Madeleine Birri from Ealing in a high quality final.
There was a second Gold medal in successive years for Niamh Southgate as she stepped up to -44kg to top the podium for Kumo Judo Club.
An all-SKK affair took place in the Pre-Cadet Girls -52kg Final with Ellie Morris and Ellie Gilbert locking horns with Morris coming out on top as she forced Gilbert into second place.
Artur Patemian (-50kg) made the jump up to -55kg as he claimed silver behind Charlie Young in the Cadet Boys -55kg weight category.
It was a loud affair on Mat 2 as Rush Judo’s Lewis Fryer defeated the valiant Omar Bougoffa in an intriguing Final with Fryer securing the ippon finish via newaza in the final minute of a contest in which he was several waza-ari scores down.
