7th for Powell at Paris Grand Slam
Natalie Powell finished 7th on the second day of the Paris Grand Slam to record her sixth 7th place finish at the event.
Powell (Irfon JC) comfortably progressed through her round 2 contest against Yuliia Kurchenko (UKR). Powell took just 30-seconds to register an ippon score to progress to the quarter-finals.
Powell was defeated in the quarter-final by Jeongyun Lee (KOR) after amassing three penalty shidos in Golden Score.
Powell faced number one seed and recent Masters bronze medallist Guusje Steenhuis (NED) for a place in the bronze medal contest. Powell went a waza-ari score down after 60-seconds of the contest before conceding a second, contest-deciding, waza-ari score with 90-seconds remaining.
The result saw Powell finish in 7th for the 5th successive time in the French capital.
Following an opening round bye, Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft JC; Andy Ede) overcame a tricky round two contest against two-time Grand Slam bronze medallist Didar Khamza (KAZ); a waza-ari score in Golden Score enough to see him progress. Unfortunately, round three was the end of the competition for Petgrave as he was defeated by former World Championship silver medallist, Ivan-Felipe Silva-Morales (CUB). A single waza-ari score enough to see the Cuban judoka progress.
Lachlan Moorhead (Sheffield JC; Matt Moorhead) won his opening-round contest against Tim Gramkow (GER); the German judoka picked up a third shido in Golden Score, before a round two defeat to Tizie Gnamien (FRA).
In the -100kg category, Rhys Thompson (Enfield JC; George Hyslop) was defeated in round two by 3rd seed, Shady Elnahas (CAN) following an opening round bye. A change of direction by Elnahas registered an ippon score.
Earlier on Saturday there were Round 2 defeats for Eric Ham (Glossop JC; Geoff Ham), Lucy Renshall (SKK; Pete Blood), Acelya Toprak (Metro JC/ Relentless Judo; Darren Hawney/ Fitzroy Davies) and Lele Nairne (Bradley Stoke; Pete Douglas).
Ham won his opening-round contest against Lova Mahaisoa Randrianasolo (MAD). Ham applied a strangle to good effect to progress to round two where he was defeated in Golden Score by former World Junior Champion Heoncheol Kang (KOR).
Renshall, Toprak and Nairne all had opening-round byes before entering the competition in the second round. All three contests went to Golden Score where Renshall conceded a waza-ari score to Inbal Shemesh whilst Toprak and Nairne both amassed three penalty shidos in their contests against Seija Ballhaus (GER) and Pihla Salonen (FIN) respectively.
