5th for Yeats-Brown at World Championships
Jemima Yeats-Brown (Ryecroft Judokwai; Ian Oliver) equalled her best performance at a World Championships as she narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing 5th, on fifth day of the International Judo Federation World Championships in Doha, Qatar.
Yeats-Brown overcame Emilie Snook (DEN) in the opening round courtesy of some great work on the ground in ne-waza to pin her opponent in an osaekomi hold down for ippon score.
Yeats-Brown booked her place in Round Three with victory against Serafima Moscalu (ROU) in Round Two. Yeats-Brown registered an ouchi-gari for waza-ari score before securing victory via a second waza-ari for ippon score.
A waza-ari score was enough for Yeats-Brown to defeat 8th seed, Miriam Butkereit (GER) to book her place in the Quarter-Finals to face World Number 1 and defending champion, Barbara Matic (CRO).
Two waza-ari scores were enough to see Matic book her place in the Semi-Finals whilst Yeats-Brown progressed to the Repechage to face 2019 champion and current European Champion Marie-Eve Gahie (FRA).
Yeats-Brown secured her place in the bronze medal contest with a huge ura nage throw to set up a bronze medal contest against Masters Champion and Olympic silver medallist Michaela Polleres (AUT).
Yeats-Brown flew out of the blocks and took her opponent to ground but Polleres survived to take Yeats-Brown to ground in the following exchange to win via shime waza.
The result saw Yeats-Brown finish in 5th place; a result that matched her best performance at the World Championships.
Kelly Petersen-Pollard (Hardy Spicer; Fitzroy Davies) was defeated by Laerke Olsen (DEN) in the opening round. Petersen-Pollard dominated the contest but was unable to register a score. The contest entered Golden Score where, in the opening exchange, Olsen threw Petersen-Pollard with an ouchi-gari for waza-ari score.
In the -90kg category, Jamal Petgrave (Westcroft Judo Club; Andy Ede) was defeated by 2022 European Championship bronze medallist, Theodoros Tselidis (GRE), a waza-ari score was enough to see Tselidis progress.
Tomorrow is the final day of GB interest at the World Championships as Natalie Powell (Irfon JC) and Emma Reid (Redbridge JC; Steve Sandy) compete in the -78kg category.
In the -100kg category, Harry Lovell-Hewitt (Stroud JC; Richard Neale) will be in action.
