38 Pre-Cadet and Cadet British Champions Crowned at 2019 British Championships
This weekend saw the best young talent in British Judo fight it out to be crowned British Champion at Sheffield’s EIS Arena.
Over the course of the weekend 38 British Champions were crowned at Pre-Cadet and Cadet level.
In what was possibly the most eagerly anticipated final of the weekend, European Cadet Championship representative Niamh Southgate from Kumo defeated fellow British Judo Cadet international Isobel Kitchen of Rochdale to be crowned Cadet -57kg British Champion. Fellow British Judo Cadet international, Gateshead’s Mae Bostock was victorious in the -52 kg category, defeating Charlotte Jenman of Tonbridge in the final.
Ealing’s Luke Davies (-55kg) was a popular winner on the first day’s competition. Davies who was competing in his first year as a Cadet, is coached by his mum, Jo Crowley and was quick to acknowledge his coaches hard work upon his victory.
Hardy Spicer 83 had great success with Harry Cox (-66kg) and Caleb Drysdale (-73kg) both being crowned British Champions.
Camberley’s Summer Shaw (-48kg) improved upon her bronze medal at the Commonwealth Judo Championships to be crowned British Champion. Maddie Birri (-44kg) of Ealing and Jenna Massey (-40kg) of SKK were also crowned British Champions in their respective weight categories.
Wolverhampton’s Gwen Lloyd (-70kg) and Dragon Academy’s Holly Devall (-63kg) both added the British titles to their Commonwealth Judo Championship crowns from earlier this year. Joshua Leonard from Osaka JC was crowned British Champion in the -81kg category while Gregor Miller from Tayside was victorious in the -90kg.
Cordelia Gregory from Drake JC defended her +70kg title defeating Ruby Wiltshire (Hackney JC) in the final while Shayden Walters of Ernest Bevin Phoenix defeated Harrison Burns from Beach Judokwai in the final of the +90kg.
Ethan Steele (-50kg) from Grimsby JC improved upon the silver medal he won in 2018 to be crowned British Champion. Pro Judo’s Adam Belgroune (-60kg), Core Judo Academy’s Henry Sturn (-46kg) and Luke Thomson (-42kg) from Sportif JC complete the 2019 British Champions at Cadet level.
Pre-Cadets
Bishops Stortford Judokwai enjoyed great success with three athletes being crowned British Champions, Jessica Nunn (-36kg), Queenie Tancock (-52kg) and Bobby King (-50kg).
Ronnie Berry (-38kg) from Rush endured an epic 15-minute battle in the final with Benjamin Nunn of Bishops Stortford Judokwai. It was Berry who emerged victorious to win his second British title in two years. Rush Judo Club enjoyed further success as Nicole Wood (-63kg) added the British title to the Commonwealth Judo Championship silver medal she won earlier in the year.
Commonwealth Judo Championship bronze medallist Amelia Alder of Osaka claimed her second British title in two years as she won the -40kg category. While Gracie Wilson (-70kg) from Huddersfield upgraded her silver medal in 2018 to gold in 2019.
Big throwing Kenady Raine (-48kg) from Gateshead won her second British title in two years and Freddie Egleton from Kangei upgraded his 2018 silver medal to gold in 2019 with victory in the -34kg category.
Pro Judo’s Eden Heffernan (-66kg) added the British title to the silver medal he won at the Commonwealth Judo Championships and improve upon the bronze medal he won in 2018.
Milly Horsfield (+70kg) of SKK was crowned British Champion at +70kg while Paul Harvey from Tayside won the +73kg category.
Issac Hope from Bredakwai Judo Academy improved upon the bronze medal he won in 2018 at -46kg to be crowned British Champion at -55kg in 2019. Just Judo’s Alister Doig (-73kg) was crowned British Champion after finishing 5th in 2018.
Julia Marczak (-57kg) from Ernest Bevin Phoenix upgraded on the bronze she won in 2018 to top the podium in 2019.
Eva Ewing (-32kg) from Sportif and Sadie Hope (-44kg) from Thornaby Pavilion were both crowned British Champion in their respective weight categories.
Kyras Chambers-Edutie (-46kg) from Tonbridge added the British title to the silver medal he won at the Commonwealth Judo Championships earlier this year. While Kin Ryu’s Aidan Tang (-42kg) and Corey Luxford (-60kg) from Metro were also successful in their weight categories.
