243 judoka entered for 2016 Glasgow European Open

Entries have closedĀ for the 2016 Glasgow European Judo Open and we’re delighted to say that 243 judoka from 30 countries will be in action on Saturday 15 October at the Emirates Arena.

A 43 strong British team will be fighting in Glasgow with the majority of those players 23 years and under. A number of those same players will be aimingĀ to use this weekend’s competition as a starting point on the road to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

After the British team, the largest squads entered are from France and Brazil with 34 and 30 judoka selected respectively.

A young Brazilian team has been selected as part of their ‘Ohayo Project’ which aims to develop their younger athletes who have the potential to compete at the Tokyo Olympics. Among those selected areĀ Lincoln Neves (-73kg), bronze at 2015Ā Junior Worlds; Rafael Macedo (-81kg), 2014 Junior World Champion;Ā Layana Colman, pictured below, (-52kg), 2014 Youth Olympic Champion andĀ Camila Nogueira (+78kg), silver at 2015 Junior Worlds.

A number of Rio 2016 Olympians have competed at the Glasgow European Open over the last few years including 2016 Olympic champion Fabio Basile, won bronze at the Emirates Arena last year, and our very own Olympic bronze medallist Sally Conway, who was champion in Glasgow in 2014.
