14 GB Judoka set for Madrid European Open
The European Open Returns to Madrid this weekend for the first time in four years.
Recently selected for the Commonwealth Games, Dylan Munro and David Ferguson are joined by Neil MacDonald and Josh Giles in the -60kg category.
Ferguson competes for the first time since taking silver at the Dubrovnik European Cup in April, a competition where he was joined on the podium by compatriot MacDonald.
Giles also competes for the first time since taking bronze at the Sarajevo European Cup last month.
Another judoka heading to Birmingham 2022 is Finlay Allan who competes alongside Michael Fryer and Henry Wakes in the -66kg category.
Oliver Short competes in the -73kg category whilst Cameron Bradley will fight in the -90kg. Wesley Greenidge competes for the first time since claiming bronze in the +100kg category at the Sarajevo European Cup last month.
20-year-old Amel Simms competes for the first time on the continental circuit in the -57kg category whilst Jessie Edwards makes her second European Open appearance of the year.
Two judoka heading to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will compete in the +78kg category, as Northern Ireland’s Sarah Hawkes is joined by Scotland’s Sarah Adlington. Adlington enters as 2nd seed following her silver medal at the Dubrovnik European Cup last time out, whilst Hawkes, who is competing internationally for the first time this year, is seeded 6th.
Referee Graeme MacLachlan will also be on the mat in a competition that also acts as the IJF A-Examination.
The competition is scheduled to start at 8am BST on both Saturday and Sunday, but timings will be confirmed at the Draw which takes place this evening at 19:00.
